A Final Look at Google Analytics

As a whole class, let's see how we did with "all 50 states" and "all 195 countries"

Logon to Google Analytics (http://analytics.google.com)
Select 'View Reports' for your Blog
Click the down arrow near the Date Range to change the Date Range to '01-jan-08' to Today
Click the 'Apply' button to change the Date Range
Select 'Map Overlay' from the Dashboard

Countries

1. Click 'Export' (near page heading)
2. Export to Comma-Separated-Values (CSV).

Open with Microsoft Excel

  • Delete all the header rows (should be rows 1 to 10)
  • Delete all columns except the column with the state name and the column with the number of visitors (should be columns A and B)
  • Delete the footer row with dashes
  • Save file in CSV format. Do not charge format to XLS.
  • Add a new column called "Country Code"
  • Manually enter the Country Code for each country in your list using this page
  • Delete the original column with the textual description of the country. Your spreadsheet should have only two columns. The first column is the Country Code and the second is the number of visitors from that country.
  • Save again.

3. Open Shared Spreadsheet in Google Docs by clicking on this link
4. Add Your data to the Spreadsheet using cut/paste. Be sure you don't overwrite the data entered by others! Don't worry about duplicates (more than one row for the same country). We'll take care of that later.

Cities

1. Select 'United States' from list of visitor countries to drill into a list of states
2. Click 'Export' (near page heading)
3. Export to Comma-Separated-Values (CSV).

  • Open with Microsoft Excel
  • Delete all the header rows (should be rows 1 to 10)
  • Delete all columns except the column with the state name and the column with the number of visitors (should be columns A and B)
  • Delete the footer row with dashes
  • Save file in CSV format. Do not charge format to XLS.
  • Add a new column called "State"
  • Manually enter the State 2-Letter Abbreviation for each state. Need help? A full list is here
  • Delete the original column with the textual description of the state. Your spreadsheet should have only two columns. The first column is the State Abbreviation and the second is the number of visitors from that state.
  • Save again.

4. Open Shared Spreadsheet in Google Docs by clicking on this link
5. Add Your data to the Spreadsheet using cut/paste. Be sure you don't overwrite the data entered by others! Don't worry about duplicates (more than one row for the same state). We'll take care of that later.

Heat Maps

When everyone is done, I'll clean up the data and we'll take a look at 'heat maps' of the US and the World.
